Is This The End of Cell Towers?

by Cell Tower Land Owner
(New Jersey)

Is a rubik's cube going to replace my cell tower?

Is a rubik's cube going to replace my cell tower?

Hey Steve, I am very concerned. I have a cell tower on my property in New Jersey and I was just reading an article from the Associated Press and several other big news agencies about a breakthrough in cellular technology that could eliminate or replace cell towers and would be much smaller antennas, that could fit in your hand, resembling a Rubik's Cube that could be attached to light poles, telephone poles and structures. Is this article valid or full of crap?? You hear stuff like this and maybe decide on a cell tower buyout rather than loose it all in the end... gimme your thoughts on this.

thanks,
Concerned Cell tower Landlord in New Jersey

RELAX !! Cell Towers NOT Going Away Any Time Soon
by: Airwave Management

Ok, take a deep breath. Relax. It's 98% hype. I just read a related article that said they applied for 200 patents to protect the intellectual property. That means it will be tied up in courts here for years, and the Chinese will steal it in about 2 months :-) but seriously, if your cell tower was to be replaced, they would still need to go across your property. They will need to honor your cell tower lease. Can you imagine the huge mess trying to deploy 50 of these mini cellular cubes on telephone poles to replace one cell tower? If you thought the carriers had difficulties dealing with municipalities, just wait until they try to deploy these.

Here are a few other things to consider... If this technology was the next big innovation, why are Verizon Wireless and AT&T spending tens of Millions upgrading their 4G LTE networks?

Lucent says this will be available in 12 months? Hmmm. The Lucent guys (Bell Labs) were the same thought leaders at the time of divestiture that published findings stating by the year 2000 there would be 200,000 cell phone users in the USA? The actual number was wrong by almost 148 Million subscribers.

Don't worry, this may be a way to boost capacity but will never replace cell towers.
