The Proposed ATT T-Mobile Deal is Bad For The Wireless Industry and Bad For Consumers.

AT&T T-Mobile Deal Announced today is Bad for the industry and consumers.

UPDATE: Chester, NJ - November 28, 2011 -

As we at Airwave Management stated less than 6 hours after this merger was announced eight months ago, this is a bad deal for consumers, cell tower landlords and the cell tower infrastructure industry. It seems that we were correct in our conclusions and it appears that this merger will not be moving forward any time in the foreseeable future.

Chester, New Jersey - March 20, 2011 -

The proposed merger between AT&T and T-Mobile should not be allowed. The following will happen if this deal goes forward:

1) It will set a dangerous precedent that will allow a future merger between Sprint and Verizon Wireless. Sprint will not be able to compete alone against the bloated Verizon and AT&T. We will be back to the days of two carriers who build out their networks at a slow pace and attempt to stifle innovation.

2) AT&T will combine their service into a single firm that utilizes both sets of RF frequencies in a single cell site. This will cut revenues of the major tower companies by roughly 25% and have a major impact on their ability to grow and will cause certain layoffs. It will also hurt the local landlord on Main Street who will lose rental revenue from the T-Mobile network being dismantled.

3) T-Mobile has been an innovator in this industry. The initial offering of PCS licenses was intended to foster competition. It did just that… the original carriers were forced to compete and build out their networks quickly and the price of phone usage dropped for consumers a dramatic rate. By allowing such mergers you will see prices go up and quality diminish. These are the laws of economics.

4) I am sure that there are many phone companies around the world or other high tech firms (Google, Apple, Microsoft etc...) who would love to invest in T-Mobile to assist them with their long term needs to compete. This is AT&T’s way of knocking off the competition cheaply and a way for Wall Street financial and legal advisers to make a short term killing while hurting the overall economy.

5) The small regional firms will not be able to compete with these giants. Metro PCS, Cricket and the rural carriers are as good as dead if this deal goes through.

6) Many financial firms who have purchased the revenue stream on various T-Mobile leases will take a major beating and thousands of jobs in this sector will be lost.

7) The industry is dependent on the major tower companies to build out their infrastructure at the rate needed to create a viable network. This tower firms absorb some of the hard costs associated with site development for the wireless carriers and it allows the carriers to put their money into their network and not into vertical real estate. The loss of 25% revenues that will be realized across the country will drive some firms out of business and will reduce the remaining firms ability to build out sites at the rate they are currently capable of.

This is AT&T’s way of destroying the competition and going back to the late 1980’s when there was only one other competitor. Do not let them do this. This merger will not only cause poor service and higher prices for consumers but will put thousands of Americans out of work. Please contact the FCC Commissioners via E-mail to voice your concerns:
